I am for the recently passed Philippine cybercrime law, a.k.a. Republic Act 10175 or the “cybercrime prevention act of 2012”, butI disagreed with some provisions. I am hoping the supreme court will act on the petitions soon to correct if it is abusive and violative of the constitution.
The issues I disagree with, among many others, are the higher and possible double penalty for e-libel. I don’t think this should be scrapped, instead, it should be aligned with the existing law. Another is the absence of due process if DOJ decided to exercise its powers. There are other gray areas but I will wait for the IRR to address these issues.
I am for internet freedom and the freedom of expression, but this should not include the right to embarrass and ridicule somebody else’s name and reputation.
